Hello, my name is Tim Brackett and I am the newest Minnesota GreenCorps member serving at the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota (BikeMN) for the 2021-22 term. I am excited to learn and serve over the next year, working on Bikeable Community Workshop coordination, the Higher Education Bicycle Network, demonstration projects, and other education and engagement initiatives.
I moved (from Iowa) to Plymouth, Minnesota in November 2012. In 2014, I purchased a blue Huffy Strider from the New Hope Unique Thrift Store and rebuilt my Huffy Strider at Cycles for Change bike shop. Over the next five years, I put over 10k miles on the Huffy as I biked all over the metro for concerts and classes, work, and play. I learned most of what I know about our metro area via bicycle.
After more than a decade working as a CNC machinist, I decided I wanted to change careers and work in advocacy, educational, and outreach roles around active and/or public transportation. To begin making this change I enrolled at Minneapolis College (MCTC) and studied Community Development, which has prepared me for outreach roles. This fall, I began studying Advocacy and Political Leadership at Metro State so I can learn how to do advocacy work. To hone my new outreach skills while learning how to coordinate educational initiatives, I applied to serve in the Minnesota GreenCorps, at the host site BikeMN. By the end of 2022, I will have the skills necessary to engage communities and work collaboratively to build safe, equitable, and sustainable transportation for everyone through advocacy, education, and outreach efforts.
When I am not serving in the Minnesota GreenCorps or studying advocacy at Metro State, I serve on the boards of streets.mn, and my neighborhood organization (Windom Park Citizens in Action). My wife (Kari), dog (Marla), and I enjoy exploring hiking trails along the North Shore of Lake Superior–especially in the winter. I also enjoy discovering new music, attending concerts, meeting new people, reading, and woodworking.
I look forward to meeting everyone who works with and benefits from BikeMN’s many great initiatives and programs over the next year and am excited to begin my work as a Minnesota GreenCorps member at BikeMN.
