Dark2Dawn: Bicycling Through History

In recognition of the 60th Anniversary of the March on Washington, the Cultural Wellness Center, Slow Roll MSP, and Melanin in Motion present Dark2Dawn – Whiteness in Plain View

Bicycle from Dark to Dawn to experience our communities more deeply. Please join us on an all-night bike ride through Minneapolis and Saint Paul’s geography that present the stories of events and people that reveal the histories of unresolved social violence one chapter at a time of the long and varied history of white Americans, as in Minnesotans, purposeful efforts to exclude African Americans from their midst and from the economic and personal benefits available to those able to become white in our society. This ride will take us Beyond Rondo. This is local testimony to our ability to celebrate our cultural heritage and promote healing. The ride is supported by The Cultural Wellness Center, members of Slow Roll Twin Cities, The Minnesota Historical Society, and Other presenters and presenting organizations.

We will cover approximately 50-60 miles at a moderate pace (10-12 mph) with breaks for refreshments, pit stops, and discussion. Each Stop will feature a reenactment of a historical person or event and artistic performances. We will travel through numerous neighborhoods and geographic landmarks in Minneapolis and Saint Paul on a route that highlights the impact of intentional assaults on Black presence and prosperity in the Twin Cities communities of Color. We will experience the long-term impacts that continue to manifest today, We are focusing on the fact that these impacts were the direct action of Public Policy and a deaf ear to the community and that future redevelopment will require the exact opposite commitment. We will make multiple stops throughout the night to highlight a significant person or significant event relative to that geographic location. Be prepared to enjoy the night and to process the experience with other bicyclists. This event fuses bicycling, art, and music into a life-changing experience. Our goal is to bring history into the light and the night.

Helmet and lights required, of course (headlight and tail light). This is a set date regardless of the weather ( we will cancel in the event it is raining at 7:30 pm). Experienced ride leaders are organizing the ride and one or more bicycle mechanics will be part of the group, but you should be prepared to fix your own flats and be self-aware: take personal responsibility for your ability to complete the route. You are responsible for yourself, but we are in this together. Bring a little cash for an emergency snack.

It is 75.00 to join the ride; you will be provided refreshments at all stops but should still have some money for your favorite food and beverages along the way. A commemorative t-shirt and buffet breakfast are included.

Scholarships are available for Black Indigenous and other POC riders. This Ride is within your capabilities and if you have the desire we recommend you commit. We will have backup transportation for anyone that reaches their limit and wants to continue. 612 875 7803 with questions.
