TCBT Ride Marshal Sherry – She’s Back! – Concussion Comeback

After a year of recovery, those were the beautiful words two friends said to me when we met for a hike.  I had my sparkle back and could bike, hike, and kayak again. In the summer of 2022, I suffered a bicycle injury (my helmet saved me), that then lead to a hiking accident. Between those two incidents I broke a rib, my pelvis, hip socket, neck, and wore a neck brace 24/7 for 10 weeks. I had 2 brain injuries that caused amnesia and vertigo. I could not walk a straight line, maneuver stairs, fell often, and had to relearn how to balance. I wanted so badly to ride my bike again, but my brain would not sync with my leg to get off the bike. Progress was slow, but I was determined. My neurologist credits my recovery to being active and in shape. My motto is to keep moving and as a good friend says, “Get Outside and Play.” Today, I am back biking (over 2,500 miles already this year) and will be a bike marshal at this year’s TCBT again! Say hello if you see me on the course.

TCBT Ride Participant Megan – Raising Money for Type 1 Diabetes – Why I Ride…

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2008 at the age of 26. Everything in my life changed that day. Managing the disease is a 24/7 job – there are no breaks, no days off, and not shortcuts.  But through it all, I have discovered something powerful: Type 1 diabetes doesn’t define me, and it certainly doesn’t limit me.  I started riding with Breakthrough T1D in 2018, and it quickly became more thank just a ride. It became a community – a powerful, passionate group of people united by one shared mission: to find a cure for type one diabetes. Whether you live with T1D, love someone who does, or simply believe in the cause, this community lifts each other up and pushed us forward, one mile at a time.Breakthrough T1D’s partnership with BikeMN and the TCBT has only strengthened that sense of connection.  Through training rides, events, and shared purpose. We ride not just for ourselves – but for everyone affected. Every time I get on my bike, I ride to prove that T1D can’t stop me. I ride to show that is possible. Most importantly, I ride to help turn hope into a cure.Megan will be riding the TCBT to raise money for T1D. If you see her on the course or other T1D riders – give them a shout of encouragement.

TCBT Supporter – Carly – Taking One Day at a Time with LUPUS – Exercise Keeps Me Going

During the height of the pandemic, after years of intense pain and feeling like I was always on the verge of getting the flu, I was diagnosed with Lupus.  This autoimmune disease mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, creating swelling of the joints and organs.

Despite the pain, I am one of the lucky ones. Once I was finally diagnosed, it opened the door to a host of (mostly) covered specialists and medications that have improved my quality of life.  While my lupus symptoms flare, daily movement makes my days manageable.

As a kid my dad and I would spend summers outside camping and fishing, little did I know that while it provided some great bonding, it also taught me that activity creates a happier body.  A lesson I count on today to help keep symptoms at bay.

I used to love to run, but since I need impact-free exercise to protect my joints, I have found the glory of biking.  To ride my bicycle is to be free.  It’s a break from doctors’ offices, testing, and bad news. It makes me feel connected to nature, it gives me a chance to get out of my head and appreciate how green the grass is and how beautiful wildflowers are along my route.  Each pedal stroke is a reminder of my strength and resilience. Lupus changed the way I live my life, but it hasn’t taken away my determination to find joy and fulfillment.

Carly will be cheering for you at the start of the TCBT this year – give her a high five! Whether you ride for fun, exercise, or mental health
